Angel Olsen // Beck \\ Foals
Angel Olsen – Forgiven/Forgotten
This was available late last year and made my BEST SONGS OF 2013 LIST. The full album is out now but be warned that it’s not all like this. She leans toward a darker folk sound and has played and recorded with Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy and dueted with Marissa Nadler (whose new album I just picked up) showing off her impeccable cooperative pedigree.
Beck – Heart is a drum
Beck blows hot and cold for me (mostly cold). I bought the LP ‘Mellow Gold’ when it came out under duress while still DJing and rated ‘Devil’s haircut’ off ‘Odelay’. ‘Mutations’ was one of those records on continuous play in the store that I can’t help feeling attached to because of the pure repetition (add Verve ‘Urban Hymns’ and Coldplay’s first album to this list). I’ve pretty much ignored his output since until this week when I stumbled across this track of his new album ‘Morning phase’. It’s a perfect road trip song somewhere between early Iron & Wine and Uncle Tupelo.
Foals – Hummer
A post-Cellardoor floorfiller that still finds its way into various sets by way of the Passions Remix. Sadly, I’ll be missing them when they play RAMFEST in March 2014.
